Why You Might NOT Want a Facebook Business Page
Everywhere you lend an ear these days, people are talking about Facebook. And they’re saying that if you don’t have a Facebook presence with your business, you’re missing out.
Well, this is like so much else in life: true and not true. It depends.
You may, after all, be in such a situation that the precepts of the social networking site simply don’t suit. Consider the following criteria.
Don’t use Facebook for your business if:
- You’re not interested in the news that is relevant to your biz.
- You’re not interested in dealing with having to fit another daily routine into your schedule.
- You’re not interested in having conversations.
- You’re not interested in meeting new people.
- You’re not interested in building a brand.
- You’re terrified of losing control.
- You’re terrified of compromising your privacy.
- You feel no particular sense of generosity; you have no special need to share with your market.
- You have no tolerance for differing opinions.
If any one of these describes you, you’ll have at least some issues with Facebook. For instance, if you are not interested in having conversations, but none of the other items relate to you, you may have a Business Page, but it will falter for lack of trust. Or if you’re terrified of losing control, but none of the other items describe you, still, sooner or later, Facebook will challenge this fear.
The list can be skewed differently to show the advantages of keeping a Facebook Page, while describing the character of successful business use of the site.
- You hunger for news of your field. You’re a participant.
- You stay happily updated by spending about 20 minutes a day on the site. You’re predictable.
- You devote the largest hunk of that 20 minutes to fostering conversations. You’re connected.
- You know that the more people you meet, the more likely your list will grow, and the money’s in the list, right? You’re sociable.
- You are proud of your brand and want to share it. You’re a leader.
- You know what you can control, and what you can’t. No use panicking. You’re smart.
- You post only data that you’re happy to share with anyone. You’re transparent.
- You know that influencing others through your sharing is how you will stay Top Of Mind. You’re a marketer.
- You believe in wealth through diversity. You’re a team player.
As with the first list (albeit turned around) if any one of these describes you, you’ll have at least some success with your Facebook Page. For example, if you’re smart but not a leader, you’ll still find the tool quite useful.
If you relate more to that nay-saying first list, please don’t be offended. I’m talking about a social network, not Judgment Day. If that list describes you to a T, stay away from Facebook; and probably you should stay away from business in general. But you have every right to live as you please, bless your thorny little heart.

Mary!!!
What a great post!
You have a terrific sense of ‘tell it like it is’ and that makes me want to read everything you write. You give no ‘fluff’.
Being a participant, a leader, a marketer, a team player…et. al, is what Facebook Fan page is all about. Very clever how you put it all together!
Does the same hold true for the other sites? Twitter, LinkedIn for example? Perhaps on different levels.
Nice work, Mary. I think I’ll post this on my fan page and share the news…I need to show my participation today!

Gee, what a great comment, Janine. I do try hard to waste nobody’s time with my writing. Time’s at such a premium for everyone! Thanks, you are most kind.
Nicely done. I like the way you turned the tables to make your point! I think I will share this on my fan page too! Thanks for the food for thought.
