How To Set Up a Facebook Business Page

[ 0 ] April 1, 2010 |

When it comes to setting up a Facebook page for your business or a professional page for yourself that you would like to be separate from your personal profile, there are a few ways to go about doing it. You will need to have a Facebook account with a personal profile set up. Keep in mind that as an Administrator for your Facebook page, fans of your page do not have access to your personal profile information nor do they even know that you are the Administrator unless you choose to reveal that somewhere on your page.

To start, log into Facebook and either click on “Ads and Pages” in the left menu of the Home page. You can also do it directly here: Create a Page.

Select whether you’ll be making a local page, a brand or product page or an artist, band or public figure.  If you are a brick and mortar business, you might want to consider choosing local page to increase the likelihood that you will be found in local searches. Clicking on any of these three options will bring up a drop down box to choose a sub-category for describing your business.

Give some thought to which sub-category you choose as this is permanent and you cannot change it later.  Also, depending on which sub-category you choose, certain information fields can be included for some categories with different information fields for other types. For example, if you choose Local Business, then you will have options for including information about parking and public transportation but if you choose Brand or Product, those options will not be available.

Title

Choose your title carefully as this is also something that is permanent and cannot be changed later. The only way to change it would be to delete the page and start over. It is recommended that you either use your proper business name or to also include some of your targeted keywords to increase your page’s chances of being found in Facebook Search and in the search engines.

Create Your Page

Once you’ve decided on the basics for your fan page, check the box certifying that you are an official representative with permission to create the page and then go ahead and click “Create Official Page.” You’ve now officially created a professional, business Facebook page. Your next steps will be to upload a profile picture, complete the information for the info tab and add lots of other good content…but we’ll cover that in another post!
